Book 89. Black Sheep by Rachel Harrison.
Milton may have been “of the devil’s party,” but Harrison clearly is not.
I can respect the decision to criticize all religion by making a Satanic community - and Lucifer himself - just as dry and two dimensional as any other religious organization.
Respect, but not enjoy.
While I fell in love with Harrison's writing style right off the bat, I grew increasingly frustrated with the clumsy broadcasting and refusal to develop any character. The satanic church is made up of cardboard faces, and Lucifer himself is flat. It comes across as laziness- relying on the audience to come up with their own concepts of Satanists and religious cults, without doing any of the work.
How do you make Satan boring?
